About Local Citation Directory
Local Citation Directory is a free directory of local businesses in cities around the world. You can find a plumber, dentist or restaurant by city and neighbourhood, compare ratings and reviews, and contact the business directly. There are no ads, no sponsored listings and no paid plans.
How rankings work
Sorting by star rating alone rewards businesses with very few reviews: two 5-star reviews would beat hundreds of 4.7s. So we use a Bayesian average. Every business starts as if it had 10 reviews of 3.5 stars, and its own reviews pull the score up or down from there. The more reviews it has, the more its own rating counts.
For example:
- 4.7 stars from 300 reviews scores 4.66
- 5.0 stars from 2 reviews scores 3.75
So the business with 300 reviews ranks higher.
A business with no reviews yet keeps the 3.5-star starting score until its first reviews arrive. Ties go to the business with more reviews. Payment plays no part, and businesses can't pay us for anything.
To keep pages useful, we only publish a ranked list when it has at least 5 businesses, and a neighbourhood list when it has at least 3.
Content guidelines
Reviews help people choose well only if they're honest. Every review is checked against these rules before it's published.
- Write from experience
- Review a business you've actually used. Describe what happened, not what you heard.
- Keep it relevant
- Focus on the service, the price and the people. Leave out unrelated politics or personal disputes.
- Be respectful
- No threats, harassment, hate speech or profanity aimed at anyone.
- Protect privacy
- Don't share phone numbers, addresses or full names of staff or other customers.
- No conflicts of interest
- Owners and staff can't review their own business or a competitor's.
- No incentives
- Don't post reviews in exchange for discounts, freebies or payment, and businesses mustn't offer them.
We remove reviews that break these rules. We don't remove reviews just because they're negative, and nobody can pay to have a review removed.
